Blade runner 2049: WIP: Clothing

General / 31 March 2022

So last time I posted I had done the work in marvelous designer for his clothing (*see last blog post).   Since then I worked on the zbrush sculpt, retopo'd, baked, worked on the first texture pass and got it setup in marmoset.  The fur I made with cards, if anyone is curious I can elaborate... but its game res geo so I'm pretty happy with the turn out on it. (*see wireframe image below).

Next up I have to get some decent lighting in the marmoset scene (this has just been super simple lighting for working purposes), Then texture polish (because this is all simple blockin right now), and then more work on the likeness to finalize everything.  I'll probably do another pass on his hair as it looks odd from the viewing left side in some lighting.  But other then that, its finally getting close!  :D  Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Finally got hair into Marmoset

General / 25 January 2022

Continuing my Ryan Gosling/Blade runner Likeness project.  Got my xgen groom mostly done and now imported into marmoset for real time rendering.  These screen shots are all still super basic lighting setup, no fancy dof/ color correcting or anything.  I'm still polishing this up before I worry about any of that.  Figuring out the best method to import and setup the xgen hair into marmoset real time was a pain, but I'm satisfied with this so far... just need to see if I can push it a bit further.  Next up a bit more polish on the sculpt and bake/ likeness refinement.  Then some more texture work and polish there.  After that getting the body and clothing in.

The real time xgen hair in marmoset has been a bit involved so feel free to ask if you have any questions.  Thanks for looking!

GOT Missandei: 100% Ipad Clip Studio Paint Portrait

General / 07 January 2022

Here is another attempt at an oil painting style portrait, this time of Game Of Thrones Character Missandei.  This was done on my trip back, on the plane flying from Finland to SF Bay area where I live.  Been researching/studying up more on real portrait oil painting, trying to wrap my head around it so I can simulate it better with digital and get better at this.  I think this is a step in the right direction over my first attempt at least.  I'm planning on continuing to do more of these GOT characters, but I think the next one I'll do will be a master copy of John Singer Sargent, as I think more can be learned doing master copies at this stage.  Oh and again, I intentionally diverted a bit from the photo here and there.  I tried to make her face pop more by adding more light to it and more shadow on the outside parts.  The second image shows the painting with the ref there (How I worked while painting this).  Also played with saturation and color mixing of course.  Hope you like it, thanks for looking!

iPad painting: GOT oil paint style practice

General / 31 December 2021

This was done 100% on my iPad with clip studio paint software (highly recommended). I’ve been traveling this holiday break and wanted to do something productive with my down time away from my pc. This is my first attempt at creating a traditional oil paint style painting digitally and on an iPad nonetheless. As a big Game of Thrones fan I’m planning on making a bunch of character portraits like this, so stay tuned! 😊 (the third image is with the ref).

Ryan Gosling Likeness Sculpt: Bladerunner 2049

General / 13 October 2021

Did some more refinement on the secondary forms for Ryan and a bit primary as well. Also got tertiary details going... pore and base textures in via zwrap and a fancy new HD male head scan from scan store I found and purchased today (Male Head Model 10).  These are all just screen grabs from zbrush, so nothing great to look at yet.  But... Next up I'm going to make some proper xgen hair and start rendering!  Stay tuned for the next update! :)

Quick update: Ryan Gosling Likeness: Blade Runner 2049

General / 23 September 2021

Decided to do a bit more work this am, before moving on with porosity I felt like a few things were still obviously off.  Feeling a lot better with this pass now.  So next update will be porosity!

Released... Aliens: Fireteam Elite

General / 25 August 2021

A game I worked on released yesterday!  Aliens: Fireteam Elite.  I haven't worked at Coldiron studios for a couple years now, but they made it to the finish line. :D  I'm proud of the Alien Drone and Warrior I made for that game.  Other contributions included male and female base anatomy models, (NO heads, or hair), a bunch of armor and outfits, and the shoulder rocket launcher for demolitions class.  Hopefully I can post some nice renders of the Alien drone and warrior in the near future.

Can you guess where this gun is from?

General / 23 August 2021

Can you guess where this gun is from?  A quick gun I whipped together sorta as a teaser for the next full likeness character I'm working on.  The new character will be done in a similar format to the Michael Clark Duncan piece I made a couple of months ago.  These are just quick default HDRI lighting renders from Marmoset 4.  Since its just a prop, I tried to get thru this as fast as possible, so admittedly its a little rough but its not intended to be a highlight of the piece.  Hope you like it anyway! Haha.   :D

Xgen Practice...

General / 06 August 2021

Taking another stab at the hair for a stylized saruman I started ages ago and never finished.  This time with xgen which I'm pretty much just learning the basics of, but I'm determined to get comfortable with it now. haha.  These are just maya viewport screen grabs.  I'm gonna get this painted and rendered in marmoset 4 next. :)

By the way, This is based off this wonderful concept by Met Mangindaan.  https://www.artstation.com/artwork/loqeJ
