Heath Ledger: Joker: Dark Knight Likeness

Work In Progress / 04 April 2024

Some tests in Marmoset Toolbag 4.  Keeping everything super loose still as I am planning on adding the prosthetics he has in the movie and a facial expression.  I think the likeness is close enough for this default pose, so I'll probably move onto xgen now.  Hopefully I'll dial in the likeness and realism a lot further as I get more of the pieces together.

Heath Ledger Likeness: Dark Knight

Work In Progress / 19 March 2024

It's been done a lot, but wanted to take a stab at this likeness of Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight for ages now.  I'm recording the process and will make an in-depth tutorial to go along with it.  Its very early yet, just blocking in the main landmarks and establishing likeness (along with running some facial expression tests)...  But its been going smoothly and I wanted to share the progress.  The Hair is most likely gonna be the most challenging here.  And I noticed it changes a lot in the movie, so I want to really capture how dynamic it can be.  Anyways, here is where I am at.

Blender sculpt wip on IPAD!

Work In Progress / 19 December 2023

Sorta been forgetting about the blog here on artstation. I’ve been working on all kinds of stuff tho as usual.  I wonder does anyone find this useful? Please let me know in the comments so I can gauge the interest.  Cause if it’s just me talking to myself I probably shouldn’t bother most the time. lol.

Anyway, I thought this was cool… I bought a laptop on sale with a 4090 i9 and 64 gb ram. It’s a beast, and the main goal was to try and do professional level art easily on the go.

I found out about easy canvas pro which essentially turns your iPad into a cintiq and let me tell you it’s pretty amazing!  I also use a razor gamer pad thing which for the most part enables me to work entirely without a keyboard and super quick since it’s all hotkeyed.

Anyway, the plan is to eventually make a YouTube video on the setup cause I feel like most the demos you see out there are not really geared towards industry professionals. This tech isn’t exactly new for instance, I think it’s been around for a couple of years now.

I’m also learning blender, so I’ll go ahead and build this sculpt here to full quality and render 100% on my iPad via 1x usb c… laptop to ipad  setup seen here. It’ll be good for me to learn blender and show what can be done with this setup.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions on this. I’m gonna follow thru with the artwork and tutorials either way, again just wondering if folks find value in the blog here.

Cheers,

Blade Runner 2049: Test Renders

Work In Progress / 05 April 2022

Got my lighting setup and just thought I'd do a few test renders before finishing polish and pushing likeness further.  I'm moving to Seattle and it might be a bit till I can wrap this up officially... so I figured it would be good to post one more update before finishing it.  Getting close though!

Marvelous Designer: Ryan Gosling Blade Runner

Work In Progress / 21 February 2022

Here is some more progress on my Ryan Gosling Likeness Sculpt.  I have barley used Marvelous Designer in the past so I had to do quite a lot of research to learn the software for this.  I'm really happy I did, its a very cool program and not so difficult to learn as I initially thought.  I focused mostly on the jacket here since the rest of him should be pretty easy to just sculpt.  I might have to jump back into Marvelous for some pants, but well see how it goes.  So what you see here will just serve as the base to sculpt on in zbrush.  I'm looking forward to seeing how much more I can push it sculpt and texture wise.  Feel free to ask if you have any questions and thanks for watching!

Initial zbrush import from Marvelous, no work done yet in zbrush to the garment...

Ryan Gosling Likeness: Posed with gun

Work In Progress / 13 February 2022

Got my Ryan Gosling Bladerunner 2049 Likeness posed so I can start making some clothes and sim it properly in this pose.  Anatomy won't hardly be seen so I shouldn't get too picky, but I did get into sculpting the muscles for this specific pose rather then just t-pose.  The hands were pretty tricky.  Also added his gun and a little polish here and there.  Hopefully when I get all the pieces in place I can really nail down the likeness some more.

Ryan Gosling Likeness WIP: Body and more tweaks.

Work In Progress / 08 February 2022

Added a body and made more adjustments/polish to the face.  Definitely more refinement needed in the likeness and the texture maps are still very placeholder for now.  Pieces are slowly coming together tho.  Next up will work on some clothes, and then start thinking about posing.
Thanks for watching!

Ryan Gosling: Xgen First Pass

Work In Progress / 25 November 2021

First round work in progress on maya/Xgen hair for my Ryan Gosling Likeness project.  Its been very tricky getting this spikey hair look, but I'm happy with the direction its headed now. If anyone is interested I'd be happy to share more how I approached it. I still have a lot more polish and detail work to do yet in xgen (transition hair, nose hair, peach fuzz, ear hair, neck hair, tweaks on whats here currently...), so next update I'll do some test arnold renders and start polishing this hair up.  These are all just Maya viewport screen grabs by the way.  No renders yet, Happy Thanksgiving! :D

Ryan Gosling: First Render Test Marmoset

Work In Progress / 20 October 2021

Decided to hook stuff up in marmoset before I start working on the hair.  Once the hair is blocked in with xgen and I can look at it in a proper renderer, it'll be a lot easier for me to refine the likeness.  So have to use dev goggles here with this awful temp hair XD. And of course textures and everything else is super early first pass stuff.  Btw, these are just screen grabs from Marmoset 4 with raytracing on.  Ok next up, hair with xgen!

Ryan Gosling Likeness: Blade Runner 2049

Work In Progress / 10 October 2021

Still chipping away at this likeness of Ryan Gosling.  I keep saying that I'm gonna work on porosity, but I keep getting stuck fixing errors I see. lol.  Maybe I'll move on now for real. haha.
